A Glass Art Plate With
Fused Abstract Shapes

A fused glass art plate made from fusing glass and glass shapes fused and slumped in a glass fusing kiln.

By using bright colors and glass shapes a very striking abstract art glass design can be produced with this technique.

The glass art plate can be slumped in a glass fusing mold or left as a decorative tile or large plate rest.

Stacked pieces of colored glass are placed on a single sheet of opaque fusing glass, as the stacks are three layers only one base layer is used.

Glass shapes may be cut, or selected from fusing glass scraps.

Shape size, color and outline can be varied.

Small pieces of bead making rod and a bent glass stringer were used in this design.

Fusing Supplies:

One piece of black fusing glass

Collection of colored shapes

Bent glass stringer

Glass cutter

Suitable glass fusing mold

Kiln wash or thinfire shelf paper

Kiln shelf

Glass fusing kiln

Fusing Instructions:

Step 1. Cut black glass to 6" x 6".

Step 2. Cut contrasting shapes to size or use fusing glass scraps Bend glass stringer over candle flame.

Step 3. Wash and dry all art glass pieces thoroughly.

Step 4. Set base glass on prepared kiln shelf .

Arrange glass art shapes on top of base glass, place stacks away from the edge of the glass to prevent glass edges from bulging during fusing.

Each collection of shapes is at least three layers high. The photo below is an example of how the glass may be laid out.

Step 5. Place kiln shelf into glass fusing kiln.

Use the following glass fusing schedule for the first stage of the process.

The annealing stage has been removed as the fused glass will be annealed during the glass slumping stage.

1. 300°F up to 1100°F hold 20 minutes

2. 75°F up to 1225°F hold 10 minutes

3. 1275°F up to 1500°F hold 15 minutes

4. 600° F down to 94° F

5. Turn kiln off and allow glass to cool to room temperature.

This photo shows the fully fused art glass plate after removal from the glass kiln.

Step 6. Apply about 5 coats of kiln wash to fused glass slumping mold, allow to dry between coats.

When mold is completely dry, put fused glass plate in mold and place in glass fusing kiln.

Step 7. The following slumping schedule may be used to slump and anneal the fused plate.

1. 300°F up to 1100°F hold 20 minutes

2. 100°F up to 1250°F hold 30 minutes

3. 9999 (Full) down to 960°F hold 60 minutes

4. 150°F down to 750°F

5. Switch off, cool glass to room temperature

When glass has cooled to room temperature remove from glass kiln.

The above methods can be used on various sizes and shapes of fused art glass creations whether they are slumped, or left as a colored tile or coaster.

If desired scrap dichroic glass may be included in this glass art design to give a real sparkle and contrast to the plate.
